My favorite eatery in the city has to be Tacorea. If you can’t get enough of tacos and Korean food, then this is the right spot for you. The unique yet beautiful fusion of Mexican and Korean cuisines will keep you coming back for more. Yes, I have to agree it’s not the most healthy option, with tater tots and meat galore, but you will not regret it. Plus, it would be best if you usually walked up a hill from Union Square to get to the restaurant. That’s your chance to say goodbye to some calories. And get ready for the feast you’re going to get at Tacorea.
Tacorea is a small establishment located in Lower Nob Hill. There is not much space inside, so you might expect to share a communal table with strangers. The line is usually super long. So, be sure to get there early when they open (at 11:30 am for lunch and 6 pm for dinner) to secure a seat. They play good upbeat music and let you enjoy sports T.V. from the multiple screens on the wall.
The menu includes popular Mexican items like tacos, burritos, or quesadillas but with a Korean twist. The mouth-watering fillings or toppings contain ingredients like sautéed kimchi, spicy Korean pork or bulgogi (sweet marinated beef) for a special kick. The sour and spicy of the hot salsa combined with the sweetness of the meat never fail to deliver a flavour explosion in my mouth. What I like the most is the addition of crispy tater tots inside a burrito or quesadilla, giving it another layer of texture besides the soft meat and creamy guacamole. My go-to is a California Burrito and Tater Tots Nachos, and each is less than $10. You get the best bang for your buck on everything, because the portion is HUGE and the flavour are to drool over.
Rumour has it that if you check in online when you visit Tacorea, you get a free hug from one of the two owners. Both guys are cute! I have never tried checking in because it’s not my habit to tell the world where I’ve been, but I go there too often I might as well get a side of hugs with my burrito.
