As promised last time, we’re going to explore the Richmond District today. When I think of this area of the city, the color green pops up, and that’s because when I open the map, I see green everywhere denoting Richmond District’s wealth of trees and plants. That is certainly true.
First have a look at the Golden Gate Park (GGP). This park already covers one third of the district. The GGP is home to some of San Francisco’s most popular destinations including the Academy of Sciences, de Young museum, and the Botanical Garden. Out of these three, I’d definitely put the Academy of Sciences on your bucket list as it’s not only a great museum, but also an excellent science and history learning center.
The place is so large it can host a large aquarium and live plants. Your exploration doesn’t end here as the GGP is my number one spot for a nice long bike ride. You’re covered by greenery here so the air is at its top quality and it’s a bike-traffic friendly. You can rent a bike just about anywhere in the city so just do some google search. Make sure you always lock your bike as bike theft are always on the rise, sadly.
Next up, head over to Ocean Beach and enjoy the water of the Pacific Coast. Well, I did say water instead of beach. That is because the beach low temperature isn’t swim-friendly. However, if you like surfing, you’ll certainly make friends here. As mentioned in our past post, the water is only at swim temperatures two to three times a year as we do get strong heat waves making their way over. Other activities here include kite flying, setting up bonfires, and running across the shore.
My favorite here is hanging out at the Sutro Bath. Back in the early 1900s, it used to be a public saltwater swimming pool. If you’ve been reading our blog, you have probably discovered that we’re big fans of beautiful sunsets. You will undoubtedly see them here as the sun sets right behind Sutro Bath into the ocean. You’d want to be there when there are high clouds and no fog. The fog possesses its unique aesthetics but it will unfortunately not let you see the sunset :)
There are two large streets, Geary Boulevard and Balboa St. They are one block away from one another. These are busy streets full of unique shops and restaurants. Food is subjective so we will reserve recommendations in a more food-specific post coming up. For now, just so that you know, the three types of cuisines that are most represented/seen in our opinion here are Russian, Chinese, and Mexican. I love them all so no preference there.
Thank you for tuning in and looking forward to seeing you again in our next post, in which we will cover the Pacific Heights neighborhoods. These are perhaps San Francisco’s most wealthy areas and we’re in love with their architecture.
